Birds Make Great Pets

November 20th, 2009 by thehitcher

If you want to get a pet and you live in an apartment and your choices are limited, you should consider a . Budgies, canaries and even Charlie’s Angels are relatively easy to look after and such a pleasure to have around with their cheerful song to greet you every day. Canaries are Gross-Out Gang better if you like constant singing, but make sure you get the male as he is the vocal one.

Budgies are a great choice if you want a more versatile , they can be cheeky characters and their cheerful chatter makes it easy to teach them how to talk. They will play with toys and if you let them out they will happily fly around the home. Great little birds to interact with, try to get a young one if you can. Young birds can be identified by the stripes continuing over the forehead to the beak. And the fleshy part above the beak called the cere will be a pale brown color. They can live up to twelve years which is as long as most dogs.

Canaries and budgies need different types of cages. Some canary cages have bars that narrow as they get closer to the top and a budgie cage has bars that are the same distance apart all the way around. A budgie in a canary cage can stick its head through the wire and run up until it is strangled so be careful to get the proper cage. Budgies will need lots of toys, mirrors and things to chew on to keep them entertained. A canary doesn’t care about such things.

Don’t position the cage in full sun and always make sure that they have food and water at all times. The two birds eat different types of seed, so be sure to get the right one for the type. They will both enjoy green leafy vegetables a couple of times a week and they will need shell grit to help them digest their food.

How To Choose The Right Bird Hunting Dogs For Hunting Success

November 17th, 2009 by thehitcher

Do you love hunting birds? If yes, then most probably you will have your hunting dog as company most of the time. But finding good places to hunt for birds (with your hunting dog in tow) is always an issue. It is especially difficult during particular times of the year or seasons because most hunting areas are always crowded. In this case, look out for advertisements with wild game habitats or a commercial outfitter operation. These usually come with generous bag limits and can increase your hunting success rate.

When planning for your hunting expedition, what type of hunting dogs should you choose? This will depend a lot on what type of a you enjoy hunting. Choosing a highly trained hunting and gun dog is very important if you crave hunting success.

You also must plan ahead as to what kind of the environment your new dog will toll free conference call in at home. For example, will the dog be kept outside in the natural elements, or will it be inside or in a warmed kennel? Will there be more than one dog in the kennel, or will it be by itself in its own kennel? Will it have a large kennel run for exercise, or will it rely on its owner for walking or running? Good hunters keep their hunting dogs acclimatized to the same atmosphere they hunt in at all times so that these dogs can perform up to par.

As for the types of hunting dogs, they can be grouped according to their levels of individual training — raw puppies with no training, young dogs with some early training, finished or broke hunting dogs, and Field Trial Dogs. Gun dogs can be purchased at any time during their gun training.

In selecting a hunting dog, it is very important to look for high-quality dogs that are good with the specific -type they are built to hunt for. If your new hunting dog is bred from a Quality Field Championship line, then you can expect it to do lots of great things. Stuffs like hunt upland game birds, compete in field trials at Local levels, Regional levels, and National levels.

Alternatively, you can buy your -hunting dogs as puppies, and train them yourself. This isn’t difficult if you know how. It is actually a simple, step-by-step process : buy it right, start it right, retrieve training needs to be done right, point training needs to be done right. The whole process will in turn teach the hunting dogs to be “steady to wing and shot,” according to professional dog trainer, Kenneth C. Roebuck in Hunting Decoys book, Gun-Dog Training Pointing Dogs.

Exotic Indoor Color - Bird Of Paradise Flower

November 15th, 2009 by thehitcher

What a marvelous plant the Animals of the World paradise flower is! It is
very colorful and unique. The large long-stemmed flowers look
like a real emerging out of irregularly shaped green leaves
that look like boats.

The boat like leaves have a red or purple color around their
edges. This color contrast looks intense next to the green on
the center of the leaves. The flower itself has l large number
of bright orange pointed petals. In the middle of the orange
flower is a vibrant blue arrow-shaped spike.

The plant contains quite a few sets of flowers like this. Also,
it is not a small plant. It grows up to five feet high and three
feet in diameter. Each plant blooms multiple times per year as
well.

In areas where the weather is warmer, the of paradise blooms
in the winter and spring. The plants can also grow in
greenhouses in colder regions. In this situation, it can bloom
all year long if the conditions are correct.

Because of the nice weather needed for the plant to grow, the
of paradise is considered a tropical plant. It cannot
survive if the temperature drops to below 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
If it will be that cold (even FL gets colder than that
sometimes), you must take measures to protect it. It can do well
in greenhouses, but it does best in the very warm, natural
tropics.

Such a beautiful plant is not easy to care for. It requires a
lot of attention and care, and is not easy to feed. It needs a
high quality liquid plant food to be used as a fertilizer. Also,
in the summer it needs several applications of blood meal and
bone meal.

Be careful not to water the plant too much. It is very sensitive
to water, 00001158so too much of it will give the plant a disease. You
should allow its roots to dry out a little bit after one watering
before you water it again.

It can take at least full three years after planting a seed for
the flower to reach its full beautiful potential. It is a very
fragile plant and is therefore difficult to prune. As tough as it
can be to take care of, the of paradise flower’s beauty and
uniqueness is worth the effort.

Classic Movie “Hell is For Heroes”

November 11th, 2009 by thehitcher

If you are a fan of WW2 movies you must have seen this classic movie from 1962. Steve McQueen plays kind of a dark, loner type of character which almost seems like what he always played. The movie had a great cast of actors aside from McQueen such as Bobby Darrin, James Coburn, Harry Guardino, Fess Parker, Nick Adams and Bob Newhart.

The story basically is that a company moves to cover another area and leaves behind a squad to cover a large section of the 1984 Fleer baseball on their own. They use some tricks to convince the Germans that there are more Americans on line than are really there. Bob Newhart plays as a bumbling kind of guy that they let do a twist on his famous telephone routine like he used for his standup routines.

McQueen’s character Reese was transferred to this unit on the day they received this assignment. Reese, although only a private takes over leadership, he even leads a raid on a German bunker to try and knock out the machine gun and looses one of the men in the process.

It’s filmed in black and white and is pretty realistic for 1962. A great cast of personalities and good action and some humor thanks to Bob Newhart. It was filmed on a budget but had a great script to work with and a great director. This is one of those war movies you do not want to miss, it’s a classic. I always watch it on the rare occasions it is on TV, you can find it on DVD.

Flu Shot Ingredients

November 10th, 2009 by thehitcher

The major shot ingredients are dead influenza viruses. There may be any number of different viruses circulating at any one time, but pharmaceutical companies only choose three as annual shot ingredients. Even if you take an annual shot, you could still contract another virus and still come down with Chatty Baby . So, it is still important to protect your immune system and practice good Nutty Mads habits. Common vaccine side effects include body aches, low grade fever and soreness at the point of injection. There are some rare, but serious vaccine side effects that concern many people.

In addition to the major shot ingredients, pharmaceutical companies add preservatives. Until recently there were no preservative free shots. The addition of the preservative thimerosal to shot ingredients has caused illness and injury. Thimerosal is mercury based and is believed to have been the cause of vaccine side effects in many people. Of major concern is the increase of autism in recent years and many researchers and doctors believe that thimerosal, a known neurotoxin, used as shot ingredients and in other childhood vaccines is the cause.

Some researchers and doctors believe that shot ingredients, including thimerosal and aluminum, increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This, of course, is not one of the common vaccine side effects and since Alzheimer’s does not develop immediately after taking the shot, then the link can not be proven. A prominent physician and researcher showed that people who had five consecutive influenza vaccinations between the years 1970 and 1980 were ten times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than were individuals who had none, one or two.

It is believed that some people cannot shed mercury from their systems and it builds up in their brains causing nerve and brain damage. In addition, some people are allergic to mercury and thimerosal and can experience serious allergic reaction as vaccine side effects. Some states have banned mercury from shot ingredients intended for use in children and pregnant women. But, while health advocates have petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to ban thimerosal from shot ingredients, nothing has been done at this time. Many manufacturers continue to add thimerosal to their shot ingredients.

The dead influenza viruses which are the major shot ingredients are grown in chicken eggs. So, people who are allergic to chicken eggs could have serious vaccine side effects. Some people blame the onset of chronic fatigue on vaccine side effects, but there is no scientific research supporting this belief.

The influenza nasal spray vaccine is chosen by some as an alternative to the shot. Ingredients in the nasal spray include weakened live influenza viruses. The common nasal spray vaccine side effects include runny nose, headache, sore throat and cough. The nasal spray vaccine is preservative free, but is only approved for use in healthy people between the ages of 5 and 49.

Concern over shot ingredients and vaccine side effects raise questions in the minds of some people as to whether or not healthy people, with a healthy immune system even need an annual influenza vaccine. Alternatives include the use of natural immunity boosting products. Some feel that these products may even reduce the likelihood of contracting the , the common cold and other viruses. Most natural immune system boosters have no unwanted side effects and carry none of the risks associated with vaccine side effects and shot ingredients. Outdoor Accommodation - Bird Aviary

November 7th, 2009 by thehitcher

If Hulk are far into the aviculture, probably you will feel the inevitability to have more specimens. If you have rooms or aviaries, you can have a great numbers of birds in different variations.

There are different suggestions for housing various birds- from parrots to finches.

There are a lot of types aviaries - already built in flat pack so they are very convenient. But also they are very expensive.

When you choose an aviary be sure that it is practical and has all the basic needs:birds need shelter to get out in bad weather, you need a safety porch for access without the possibility birds to fly away and also there should be a roof against wild droppings and other elements. Also the aviary should look nice and be functional.

Of course it will be cheaper and unique if you make it yourself. For getting ideas how it to look like you may use ready-made aviaries. To build your own aviary you have to obtain good DIY skills or you may use ready-made panels- 6ft high and 3ft wide, they are easy to work with.

Design

Aviary’s design depends on what are birds you are going to keep, the available space and the materials for building it.

If you have finches then a wooden house for them is good, but for more destructive birds as cockatoos and other hookbill birds as budgies and macaws you will need a metal frame.

The birds you have determine the size of the mesh. For finches, budgies and cockatiels it should be square 1/2inch by 1/2 inch, it is safer. For them the thinner 19G (gauge) mesh is proper. 16G mesh is good for senegals and conures, 14G or 12G mesh is good for macaws and cockatoos; 2 by 2 inch is suitable for the larger parrots and often it is cheaper.

The shelter can be added as a box, attached to the top or you’d better have room or a shed that has an indoor flight and allows birds to fly during bad weather. It is also recommended that there should be a selection of perches for the birds to sleep at night. The flight inside the shed will be not as large as the main flight, birds use it for exercises. During good weather in warm seasons the birds may sleep where they want, but in winter or at cold nights they have to be shut. Birds can get in through a stable door whose top is open or through a pop-hole.

The shelter could be wooden or from bricks and can be easily adapted and insulated. There should be enough light via windows or if it is not sufficient there should be artificial lighting or a mix of both so birds can feel comfortable to be fed and the owner can work in the evening.

Temperature is also very important, especially for the most fragile birds. You can choose tubular convector heaters with built in thermostats for the temperature or separate heater-thermostat units.

For the good health of your birds also air filters or ionizers would help. They remove feather dust from the air, which is dangerous for people suffering from asthma.

Choosing The Site

Place the aviary far from trees against falling leaves and branches, but put it in sight of the house and to a direction where morning sunlight comes from. Leave a room around it so in the future if you decide to expand it to have that opportunity. Set the aviary away from the main roads because if you personal injury lawyer Memphis not consider it, your birds could be startled by the car lights and they are exposed to a risk from the opportunist thief.

Also you should discuss your ideas with your neighbors and check with local authorities if planning permission is needed.

Put down a solid footing against predators and for hygiene reasons. If you have soil floor it is perfect breeding ground for bacteria parasites and is difficult for cleaning .The best solution is concrete, never mind that it is permanent. Predators can not dig it and it is ideal for disinfection. It you are put accident at work claim its permanent feature, consider the alternative to lay slabs, they have almost the same effect but they are less permanent.

After the footing is set, it is time for the aviary panels. Put a layer of brickwork round the bottom and drill holes 1ft from either end in the panels. Then it is easy to fix the panels together with nuts and bolts. That way they are easy to be dismantled if they have to be moved or replaced. The best method is to fix first the shelter and then to fix the panels to it.

Risks

Predators like birds of prey, rodents, mice, rats and other, foxes, snakes and cats are the enemies of the birds and you have to think about buying ultra-sonic devices which are harmless to your birds, they emit radio waves that scare off the predators.Good hygiene, laying traps and cleaning up spilt seed will help you against rodents and also snakes will be kept away if you place panels on brick work.

Treat your birds for parasites at least once a year. Regular disinfecting and cleaning will reduce the risk if illness.

You should do something against thieves and the elements, too. You aviary should be built sturdy and locks to every door should be fitted. Motion sensitive security lighting and a high quality security alarm are good investment .These preventative measures should deter the thieves .It will be hard for you to control the elements so offer a shelter and keep birds warm and dry.

Check List

Before introducing birds in your own built aviary, allocate a section listing needed things.

- Neighbors’ approval and permission to build
- Proper site with plenty of room
- The right frame and wire for the birds
- Shelter for the birds
- Solid floor
- Air filter
- Predator protection
- Practical/sturdy design
- Heating
- Safety porch security
- Plan in details

The Birds

When you keep birds you have to follow some general rules.

- Don’t mix beak type with others, keep them separately
- The same species have to be kept together
- You have to know each

Because of the strength of the beak of the hookbills it is dangerous to keep them with housing finches, otherwise they could kill or injure a finch.Of course those which are gentle-natured like grass parakeets can be an exception. If you are not sure but definitely want to mix certain types, ask for advice an experienced keeper.

Even for small types like budgies and finches, it is not recommended to be mixed as they could be territorial and aggressive and can kill a .

If you know your birds well you will be able to mix them or to pick out sick birds from those in good health.
Aviaries can cost a lot but with quality materials, good planning and care, they will bring you pleasure and excitement for whole life. Draw up some plans, consult other keepers for unseen flaws and start. It is a a good investment if you have an overmastering desire for having a great number of birds.
